The Many Uses of Dental Crowns

Crowns (caps) are coverings that encase the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. Crowns protect and strengthen teeth that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations. Crowns are indicated for the following.

COMPROMISED TEETH

To cover and support a tooth that has a large filling when there is no longer much healthy tooth structure.

WEAKENED TEETH

To protect a tooth that is weakened (for instance, due to decay) from the danger of breakage.

BROKEN TEETH

To restore a tooth that is broken or severely worn down.

MISSHAPEN TEETH

To cover a tooth that is misshapen or severely discolored.

A Restorative Solution

What is a bridge?

Bridges are a replacement for missing teeth. A bridge basically consists of two or more crowns on natural teeth that are attached to an artificial tooth called a pontic. Structurally sound teeth are required on either side of the missing tooth or teeth. The bridge is permanently cemented to the prepared teeth and cannot be removed.

Our Treatment Process

The process of getting a dental crown typically involves the following steps:

Diagnostics
1
Consultation
Your experience begins with a dental examination and radiographs. This initial appointment is an opportunity to discuss your concerns, answer your questions. A fee proposal for the treatment will also be presented.
Medical report
2
Diagnostic Records
At this appointment, impressions and photographs of your teeth will be obtained. These records are especially important when considering treatment on multiple teeth.
Tooth check
3
Tooth Preparation
This will involve conservatively trimming the natural teeth to make room for a crown or bridge. An impression will also be taken and an interim restoration made to protect the prepared teeth.
Smile
4
Final Placement
The permanent crown or bridge will first be tried in your mouth and adjusted. When the restoration is satisfactory, it will be cemented.

Limitations

Single-Visit Dental Crowns

While it is possible to complete a crown in a single-visit, there are limitations to this protocol. There are different classifications of dental ceramics and the material used in single-visit crowns are more limited. Furthermore the internal adaptation and accuracy of fit of single-visit crowns does not compare to ones made by qualified dental technicians in a dental laboratory.

Lastly, shading of single-visit crowns is done by painting stains on the external surface of the crown. However, in order to capture the vitality of natural teeth, colors need to be built intrinsically in the crown. This can best be accomplished in a dental laboratory by a Ceramist. It is for these reasons that crowns completed at Dental Design Concepts are done in two appointments.
